Celebrity Stories: Imagist Paul Klee

Paul Klee died of a heart attack in Locarno on 29 June 1940 at the age of 61.

Klee devoted his early years to music and the visual arts. In 1900, he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied painting with Franz Von Stark. After Klee met Russian Impressionist painter Wassily Kandinsky in 1912, Klee participated in the avant-garde "Blue Rider" exhibition held in Munich. From 1920 to 1931 Klee taught painting at the Bauhaus design school and later at the Düsseldorf Academy.

After Hitler became the head of state in 1933, Klee was attacked for no reason by the Nazis. They treated Klee as a depraved foreigner who left Germany for Italy, then France, and finally settled in Switzerland.

Klee created a unique way of expressing color, form and space. The great visionary created a form of abstract art whose work was deeply influenced by his travels to North Africa and Europe, as well as his admiration for Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse .
